Just Keep Going_Sanctuary was made during a residency at The Artists Guild, a gallery run by a female artist collective inside a shopping centre in Docklands. I made a conscious decision to carry out the whole installation process with my children by my side.
The gallery became a site of shared life. We walked to the harbour, ate meals on the gallery floor, and installed the Yarn while the children painted and embroidered alongside me. The boundaries between making, living and caring dissolved. I imagined Sanctuary as a place of porous boundaries, where people from many layers of life could coexist and move freely.
Some read the work as an escape from domestic life. For me it was the opposite: I was not escaping my life. My life, in all its domestic complexity, was the work.
