Being Keepers: Unearthed, 2022, installation detail

Being Keepers: Unearthed was installed in Eden Gardens, Sydney, in collaboration with Danielle Minett and visitors. Border closures meant I could not install the work myself, and I entrusted the installation to Danielle Minett, whom I had not yet met. When I finally arrived for the deinstallation two months later, the Yarn had undergone a profound transformation. Left in a humid garden and added to by visitors, it had begun to decompose in tandem with the garden’s own ecology.

Far from being a sign of death, the Yarn was brimming with a raw, vibrant vitality. It had turned dark and heavy with the life of the garden. Some lengths simply fell apart at the lightest touch, not snapping under tension but quietly surrendering, as if they had already given themselves back. Unlike my earlier instincts to preserve and protect, I embraced the reality that things break, rot and return to the earth.
