Being Keepers: Fire (2022) is made with hemp yarn and beeswax in Melbourne.
In March 2022, while experimenting with the Yarn in water, I had been coating it with wax to help it float. Curious about how fire might interact with this material, I decided to burn it. As it burned and melted, it transformed into something that looked like the inside of a body. Watching the flame, I thought of tōrō nagashi, the lanterns floated on water each August to guide the spirits of the dead: the quiet, hovering light of mourning. I put the flame out and continued working. Only later did I begin to understand what that flame had touched.
